2018 Volvo XC40 Pricing Confirmed

2018 Volvo XC40 Pricing Confirmed - Australian details for the 2018 Volvo XC40 range have been announced this week, with the company’s smallest SUV to kick off from $47,990 before on-road costs when it lands next month.

Based on the Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) co-developed with Chinese parent Geely, the XC40 is Volvo’s third globally-available SUV model and will also be the first of the brand’s models to offer a three-cylinder engine – though we won’t get it at launch.

From April, four variants will be offered across two trim grades: Momentum and R-Design. Two engine options are offered – the T5 petrol and D4 diesel.

The T5 uses a 2.0-litre turbo four making 185kW of power and 350Nm of torque, while the D4 uses a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel four putting out 140kW and 400Nm.

Pricing kicks off at $47,990 for the T5 Momentum, climbing to $50,990 for the D4 Momentum. The T5 R-Design asks for $54,990, while the D4 R-Design is even dearer at $57,990 (all prices exclude on-roads).

Oddly, specifications for the standard trims are not available yet – however, Volvo has confirmed specifications for a pair of launch editions.

First up is the Momentum Launch Edition, available with both the T5 ($52,990) and D4 ($55,990) powertrains.

Key features “over and above the Momentum” include a sunroof, LED headlights with active bending lights, adaptive cruise control with Pilot Assist, Harman Kardon sound system, tinted windows, heated front seats, 19-inch five-spoke diamond-cut alloys, 360-degree camera system, manual front-seat cushion extension, and Park Assist Pilot.

There’s also keyless entry, an electric tailgate, electric seat adjustment for the front passenger, alarm and leather upholstery. According to Volvo, the extra specification equates to $10,120, despite a $5000 increase over the base car.

Second of the launch specials is the R-Design Launch Edition, priced from $56,740 for the T5 and $59,740 for the D4.

Additional kit over the standard R-Design include a sunroof, tinted windows, an alarm, heated front seats, adaptive cruise control with Pilot Assist, Park Assist Pilot, 360-degree camera system, and a Harman Kardon sound system.

The extra kit is said to be valued at $6670, though the launch versions of the R-Design ask for just under $2000 more than the base version.

Stay tuned to CarAdvice for a full pricing and specifications run-down closer to the XC40’s local launch next month.

Cadillac clean-sheet 4.2L twin turbo V8 is the heart of the CT6 V-Sport

Cadillac clean-sheet 4.2L twin-turbo V8 is the heart of the CT6 V-Sport - We already know that Cadillac has the new CT6 V-Sport coming that will pack a 550hp twin turbo V8 engine. Caddy is now offering up details on that small-displacement V8 engine. The 4.2L twin-turbo V8 engine has a power density of 131hp per liter giving it an estimated output of 550hp and a massive 627 lb-ft of torque.

Cadillac says that it will offer an optional 500hp version of the engine. The engine was a clean-sheet design that introduces new design elements to balance performance with efficiency. The engine has a “hot V” configuration that Caddy says “transposes the conventional layout of the cylinder heads’ intake and exhaust systems to mount the turbos to the top of the engine.”

The turbos sit in the valley between the heads in a design meant to “virtually eliminate” turbo lag and reduce the overall packaging size of the engine. The air from the turbos enters the engine through the lower outside of the heads and exits through the top inside with turbos integrated into the exhaust manifold.

That design allows for quick turbo spool-up giving drivers a more immediate power delivery. The design also allows the catalytic converters to be closer to the engine for more efficient packaging. The engine uses twin-scroll turbos and has an electronic wastegate control.

Cadillac also uses twin water-to-air charge coolers, twin throttle bodies, direct injection, dual-independent camshaft phasing, and active fuel management with cylinder deactivation. A variable pressure oil system and stop/start tech are also integrated.

The engine has a forged steel crankshaft, forged steel connecting rods, and high-strength aluminum pistons. Each engine will be hand built at the Performance Building Center in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
